How do we know if the economic stimulus payments are working?

How do we gauge if we're helping the economy with our tax rebates?

I just got mine, but I am going to have to give it back come tax season.  I am just putting it toward some high interest debt for the time being.  I will pull it out of something else to pay it pack come time to file.

I hear it will take awhile to judge.  However, two polls I have read said that 70-79%  were either going to pay off bills or bank it.  I paid bills with mine.  I don't think it helped much.  At least so far.
