  1. tennis players are ranked by SEED.  points do count, but the amount of won tournaments determines what seed rank you are. 4 major tournaments are good starts (The US open, the French Open, the Australian Open and of course, Wimbledon)

  2. For the men's ATP Tour (Association of Tennis Professionals) there are two rankings.  One that starts over every January 1.  And another that is calculated based on the results of the previous 52 weeks.  The latter is the one that is generally used to refer to so and so being number 1 in the world.  The ATP has a FAQ that explains both types of ranking in more detail.

  3. It's basically defending points from last year.  If you never had points and all of a sudden, you do well in a tournament, your ranking goes up. The next year, you have to do better for it to go up and at least do just as good previously otherwise you lose points and ranking goes down.  If you can't defend last time, how good are you really?  Points base on type of tourney. slams of course you get the most points.
