Some of our kitchen woodwork and drawers have been chewed and gouged by our pet parrot. It is possible to patch these areas? If so, how do we do it? Some of the gouges are about 1/4 inch square.

  1. There are several ways to do it.  First, you could use a wood filler product called PlasticWood.  I have used it many times.  It sands and  takes paint well.  Second, if the damage is very small, you could use wood glue to fill in the holes, sand, then paint.

  2. Nr, 2s answer is  perfect. Have done the same and it works very well.

You can also make woodfiller from sawdust and carpenter's glue

  3. A good wood filler for this is a polyester filler.  In wood tones, it's called "wood filler" and in other tones, it's called "Bondo" or the like.   You mix the resin with a little hardener, mix it up and apply it in the holes.  In about 15 minutes, it's ready to sand and finish.   It does not shrink and works better and faster than solutions meant for filling nail holes.

  4. Wood putty and let it cure and sand area down to flat area or shape as doors/drawers.  Its alot of work but I have done it in the past and looks pretty good.   Make sure you allow the putty to dry completely sometimes it shrinks back into the gouges and just re-apply wait till dry then sand.  Also when its where you want it prime the area before painting   Good luck
