Question:

How do we tame our new hamster?

Just bought a dwarf hamster for my kids. He's adorable and we want to interact with him more. Everytime we put our hand in there he bites. We are not trying to pick him up, just get him used to a hand. We have had him for 5 days now and still the kids can't even pet him. Any suggestions on the method to tame a hamster?

  1. In order to have your hamster to trust you, you should occasionly give hime treats and avoid handling him until he will gain trust in you and will come on your hands on his own. This usually takes days or even months! Patience is an important factor. Also, to avoid any bites from your hamster, make sure that you wash your hands well after handling any food or else the hamster could bite you, (as the hamster would think that your hand is food!).

  2. first off Dont wake him up from a sleep or he will be very cranky and bite.

Feed him his favorite snack through the cage bars well talking to him to associate your voice with food.

After two days of feeding him through the bars you should wash your hands very good and then put hia favorite treat on the palm of your hand. And allow him to come to your hand and eat on it. do this for several days untill  he stands on your hand and eat.

After he sits on your palm well eating lift him up and bring him out if he doesnt jump.

If he doesnt stay on your hand well picking him up use an object to bring him out of the cage once he is out play with him for about 10 minutes.

Note for Dwarves you have to play with them everday or they forget who you are and will bite you.

  3. I had a dwarf hamster too.  I had to scoop it out with a cup and put it in my hand.  thats the only way i can get him out of the cage without getting bit.  Once your holding it, it wont bite. By The way, i think hamsters p**p when ever its scared. So remember to wash your kids hands.

  4. That sounds like your trying to get him to do tricks. If you just want him to be pettable, take him out of the cage. once hes out he wont bite AS MUCH. And you just need to keep on doing this as much as posible. Soon he wont even bite when hes in the cage. Oh, and Females would have been my choise for children, much less terratoial.

  5. leave it alone for the first few days then you sart hand feeding them for about a week and then you start gently stroking them, eventually after a while you can start picking it up only for a max of 30 mins a day

  6. Its going to take a while for the hamster to get use to scent of each person. it may take a few weeks or so don't rush the hamster. You have only had him for a few days so don't pressure him into getting used to everyone in just a few days. I know this from experience. whenever i wanted to pet my hamster he would  bite me or run away from my hand. Please take my advice.

  7. When I first bought a baby hamster what I did was tame it with raisins they are small and enjoyable to the hamster. What I suggest is to set up a track or raisins and the hamster will eat the raisins as it goes along. Good Luck!!

  8. When i got my panda bear hamster the way i tamed him was everyday i would put a treat directly to him -- don't put it in his food dish or anything. i did it everyday while he was a baby so he could think wow this person gives me treats and also i use to put on the same lotion everytime i held him or gave him a treat so he got use to my scent. he is now very sweet he has never biten me-- only once when i ate food and forgot to wash my hands before holding him! the treats i got my hamsters LOVES. they were rated very high www.petsmart.com. so i went to the store i got these colorful pretzels for like 3 dollars. its now his favorite treats of all time!
