  1. Winds and currents originate at two places, the equator and the poles.  The sun creates warm winds and currents at the equator but has a much less effect on the cold winds and currents of the poles.  Warm winds and currents create warm temperatures. Warm winds and currents often meet cold winds and currents at mid latitudes creating unstable weather patterns.

The Coriolis Effect causes wind patterns and currents to swirl (like water going down a drain).  Solar heated warm currents tend to swirl toward the north and south poles until they meet cold air masses and currents.

  2. Here is a good paper on the subject.  It's too long to copy it in here, plus you wouldn't get the diagrams.
