Question:

How do wireless routers work?

I'm new to wireless computers. Do I need to have an internet account to use a router? If I don't have one, what should I do to be able to use my laptop on the go? Will it be a secure connection?

Any advice would be appreciated... I'm kinda confused about all this

Thanks

  1. This is a big topic, I suggest you google wireless, then wireless routers.

for the most part wireless routers will only give you "internet" within a certain range (like within 1 block). For internet on the go; most laptops have wifi built in, if not then you need a wireless adapter card to plug into the laptop. Yes you need to pay for internet, then get a router to connect more machines to your internet....

  2. Hi Laura.  A wireless router is just a device to allow you to share an internet connection from home or your business with other computers. A wireless router allows you to setup a "local wireless network" so that local wireless computers can connect to it so that each connected computer can share a single internet connection.

If you want to use your laptop on the go with an internet connection, you need a wide area network connection such as a 3G wireless card to connect to a wireless internet service provider.

Most laptops have what is known as 802.11 or WiFi wireless connectivity, but this only allows you to connect to "wireless access" points over a local area (about 50 meters) and not a wide area like cell phone coverage. For example, some cafe shops provide free internet access over a wireless 802.11 (WiFi) hotspot as part of their service.

These wireless hot spots do not need a router you just look for their presence using your computer and connect. Some wireless hot spots such in airports require that you pay a fee to use them.

  3. call your internet provider and ask about getting one set up, they should know everything and be able to explain it clearly for you

  4. I wireless router is something that you use to gain wireless internet around your house for your laptop or any wireless device. You do need an existing internet connection. If you already have a internet modem then all you need to do is buy a router and plug it into a port. I would recommend buying a ADSL router/Cable router with built in modem. You can find that here http://www.netgear.com/Products/Routersa... (DSL) or http://www.netgear.com/Products/Routersa... (Cable). Hope this helps!! :)
