  1. I actually do a bit of character development when I start a novel.  I spend time with each main character to get a feel for what they would and wouldn't do.  For instance, I had one character who I pictured as a drama queen of sorts.  So, I would imagine situations that would make her uncomfortable and just let my mind put a story together around how she would react.  Once you give them characteristics, they truly come to life in your head.  They have conversations with eachother and with me until I finish the book.

  2. The characters would react to certain situations in a realistic sort of way, not superficial. No character is perfect, just like people, everyone has a significant flaw. They need to have realistic emotions as well as dialog, which is key.

  3. They give them emotions and original personalities.

  4. Hm. I don't know what you mean by "real." If you mean that they earn their own personality and feelings, and likes and dislikes, then you need creativeness. Or you can model your characters after someone you know.

  5. They think of them in everyday situations, with feelings and emotions. They give them distinct appearances and personalities.

    Hope I helped! :)

  6. they just become that way, after you've been writing about them long enough; the trick is to make them seem real to other people, not just yourself.
