You swing the bat.

Here's what happens in chronological order:

You pick out a good bat, one that feels comfortable in your hands, walk up to home-plate... and wait for the pitcher to throw the ball.

Once the spheroid is released from the pitcher's hand, the rest is up to you. You either swing the bat... or not.

Here's a clue - you can't play "hit the ball" with the bat on your shoulder. Something my coach told me many years ago.
