How do yo tell if an avocado is ripe?

California avocado skin should be dark almost black in color. It should give a little bit when you squeeze it. If it's too soft then it's over ripe.

In addition, once you find one that is a little soft look at the end that was cut from the stem. Sometimes there's a little piece of the stem left. You can remove it very easily with your finger. If it's a lime green color underneath then it's good. If there's no green color and it's brown or black don't get it. It's over ripe.

Avocado is unripe if hard,and ready for use if a bit soft to fingers,but not too soft,like bread,for instance,then its either overripe(its worse)or uneatable at all.Black peaces are to be thrown out altogether,they are unhealthy.Buy some hard,then keep it in open(better not in the frige)till You can see it is has just begun to soften.Then its ready to eat

give it a squeeze.  If it's very firm it's not ripe yet.  If there is just a little put of give then it's perfect and if it's mushy it's starting to go bad.  This is pretty much the only way to tell without opening it.  If you open it and the flesh is tough then it's not ripe and if it's turning brown it's over ripe.

Gently squeeze the avocado (too much squeezing will result in bruising). Ripe avocados don't feel too mushy. You want there to be a gentle giving - think about a perfectly ripened banana when you squeeze it.
