17x - 6 + 3x - 5 = x + 11 + 4x

1. 20x - 11 = 5x + 11

2. 20x + 1 = 5x + 11

3. 9x = 16x

  1. I find it easiest to rearrange the terms, so that your x terms are next to each other on each side. Doing so would give you:

    17x + 3x - 6 - 5 = x + 4x + 11

    Then you can simplify by combining the coefficients (the numbers in front of the x variable). For example, 17x + 3x = 20x. Try to use this principle to continue simplifying the equation! (Hint: Also do the same to the regular numbers. Example: -6 - 5 = -11)

    Your answer should be 20x - 11 = 5x + 11, and therefore, number 1.

  2. It's number 1

    Focus on the left side first. Re-arrange the terms to put all the like terms together. Then, add or subtract all the like terms, i.e. the terms with an x in it. You'll get:

    17x + 3x - 6 - 5 then

    20x - 6 - 5 then

    20x - 11

    Now onto the right side, re-arrange like you did for the left side and you'll get

    x + 4x + 11 then adding them you get

    5x + 11

    So your equation is now:

    20x - 11 = 5x + 11 which is equation 1

  3. By combining like terms and getting x-terms on one side and the numbers on the other then divide or multiply to get x alone. Remember whatever you do to one side you do to the other side.

    For ther main problem:17x - 6 + 3x - 5 = x + 11 + 4x

    Combining terms give (17x+ 3x)- 6 - 5 = (x + 4x)+ 11

    which is: 20x-11=5x+11

    Getting x's on one side and numbers on the other add+11-5x to both

    Giving: 20x-5x=11+11

    or 15x = 22

    Divide both sides by 15 to give

    x=22/15

    3.) little tricky

    Getting x on both sides add -16x to get

    9x-16x=0

    -7x=0

    Div -7

    x=0
