I'm not sure how to take photos, but one thing I used to do to take photos with my webcam was to go into Windows Messenger --> tools --> webcam settings.

Then you can tweak the lighting and stuff and to take the photo, just hit the 'printscreen' key on your keyboard (PRTSC SYSRQ) and open paint and paste it and cut it.

It sounds like a lot but once you get used to it, it's nothing :)

You need to read the instructions that came with your webcam.  If you don't have them, look at the drop down menus.  Pretty much anything you'd want to know would be there.  Be considerate.  It's not a good idea to take photos without someone's permission.
