How do you activate your house alarm system to be on "armed" and not just "ready"?

Please help, I turned the alarm off but I can't seem to figure out how to set it on "armed"I have the code

With mine, the process is one of the following:

* Press and hold the "On" button, until the display reads "Armed".

* Enter your code, then hit the "On" button.

On mine, you enter the code first, the menu comes up and you enter "max" (which is also #4 on the key pad).
