I have a Rem. 870 without a choke. I want to add a choke for tighter shot patterns. Do I need to buy a new barrel or can I just buy the choke and install it?

  1. Having a gunsmith modify the barel to accept s***w-in chokes is going to cost you about the same amount as just buying a new barrel.  Keep the one you have for shooting slugs, and but a barrel that's already threaded for Rem chokes.

  2. Well the 870 I had was threaded so you could add chokes that fit your needs. Is this an older gun? you could buy an after market barrel for it that is threaded so you could add chokes. If its jsut missing they choke and is threaded, heck walmart sells Remington s***w in chokes.

  3. A Gunsmith can install a poly-choke or a select choke on you present barrel.* It allows you to go from Improved cylinder to Modified to Full at a twist of your wrist.* No having to s***w in or out other chokes. It is inexpensive and very convenient, compared to the s***w in & out chokes.* It is not necessary to buy another barrel.*

  4. Check with a gunsmith.  Most guns are bored to a specific choke, but I think that there are some devices that will let you change it.

  5. You can have a gunsmith install a choke for relatively cheap. its not s***w in but you twist it to open or tighten the pattern.
