Where do you go to add people?

Easiest way to do it if you don't know how, Ask the person who you plan to add to add you to theirs and you will receive a notice stating someone has added you to their messenger list if you agree then click yes and it will add their name to your messenger list.

Click on there avatar >Click on add to my contacts.

Actually there is a (+) sign under your avatar on your messenger that you left click and then add the contacts name or ID to.  You do not click the avatar itself.  Clicking the avatar is for changes to the avatar itself and status messages.
