How do you adjust the valves on a 4.1 chevrole 250 motor?

I have a 1981 chevrolet pickup C10. I rebuild the head but I dont know how to adjust the valves. Please help.

  1. The Repair Guide for your truck doesn't cover this procedure, but this section from GM Chevy Mid-Size Cars 1964-1988 should be the same.

    This is for initial adjustment only, before engine startup. You should adjust them again once the engine is running, by backing off each one individually until you hear a clatter, then tighten 1/2 turn back down. This can get rather messy. There are little clips you can buy to keep the oil from shooting all over the place.


  2. Valve adjustments are not to difficult if you have a bit of experience.  May I suggest going to your local Auto Parts store and purchase a repair book for your model truck.  It will have pictures and describe how to set your valves.  Should take you about an hour to do the job once you start to see how the process works.

    A few wrenches feeler gage and an remote starter control will help in rotating the engine. Set the clearances dead on and your ride will be running in just a little while.
