Does anyone know how to get a job with Sports Illustrated or another national sports publication as a photographer? Is it so elite that you need to know someone to even have your portfolio seen? Looking for suggestions; I'm sure it's not a simple one step process. Thanks.

  1. How's your writing skills? I can't say it would work for sure, but I'd try making my own little sports magazine. Don't dupe their's page for page . . . but it could all be done on a home computer. I imagine they're more likely to hire someone with some experience, as it is probably a dream job for alot of people. Sounds like you're young and have some free time. If your persistent, it impresses people. So after six months of sending it to them they might give you a look, then again they might not. Its possible all there stories and photos are done on a freelance basis too.

  2. Do some homework. Get to know the names of ALL of the SI photogs. Subscribe to not only SI, but ESPN the Magazine, and other related publications. Shoot, shoot shoot. Photograph not only action shots, but sports portraits, candids, practice, behind the scenes, etc. Practice with remotes, and strobe lighting. Once you have a decent book, begin emailing the photographers (most have websites.) Send them links to your images, ask for critiques. Take their advice. Shoot some more. Apply for an internship at SI and other reputable publications. Do a few internships, then wait about 15 years and pray they have an opening.

Writing skills are a plus, college degrees are also a plus. Learn how to adapt with a changing market.

  3. Becoming a successful sports photographer is very difficult. Becoming a successful sports photographer for Sports Illustrated next to impossible. The reason being, it is such a small, elite branch of photography. My rule of thumb is, if you have to ask, chances are you're not going to get such a prestigious position.

  4. i think if you were in school it would be easier because you can go take pictures for your photography class of upcoming games and stuff and then just progress from there, I'm not sure though I'm looking at being a sport photographer as well.
