How do you arrange a wedding in Ireland if you're from the U.S.?

Specifically a non-traditional, non-church wedding. More specifically, for April 2007 in or around Galway but location is open to suggestions.

It is possible for foreign nationals to have a legal Civil marriage in Ireland but there are quite strict residency requirements.

1. Couples wishing to marry in Ireland must give at least 3 months notice to the registrar of their intent to marry. This notification is made to the Registrar of Marriages in the district where you intend to marry and does not have to be made in person.

2. Residency Requirements

The following residency requirements apply:

You must reside in the area in which you wish to marry for at least 7 consecutive days

Following the 7 days residency there is a 21 day waiting period during which you cannot marry

Your marriage can take place at any time between 21 days and one calendar year after the last day of the period of residency.

Both parties to the wedding need to comply with the residency requirement. Before you begin the 7 day residency period you must present yourself in person to the local registrar.

Please, before you book any venues CONTACT the registry office where you want to marry.  If you are not sure of the county, you will be directed to the correct one if you contact at least the Dublin registry first.  Ireland is very bureaucratic, and you want to make sure you prepare all your documents and give proper notice to the registry.

Getting married and having it acknowledged by the US government are two totally different things.

You should start by finding a location.  They have a lot of castles that can be used for weddings if that interests you.  Most times an employee there will be able to help you.  I know that you'll have to send copies of documentation (passports, divorce papers if necessary, etc.) to the county where you plan to wed.  You'll have to do this at least 3 weeks in advance.  You should arrive a few days before the wedding to show your official papers and sign the marriage certificate.  There's a lot more to it, but this is basically what you will need to do.
