As a marketing director, I receive solicitations from non-profit organizations all the time. Since I don't have endless resources, I have to limit the number of donations I can make.

If you want to be successful at this, I think you need to think about who your fundraiser might appeal to.

For example, if your charity supports children, you might approach companies in your area that market for products for children or sports. If your charity supports a shelter for abused women, think of businesses that are women-owned or that market primarily to women.

Businesses are always looking for charities to align themselves to that will help improve their image in the community. But you will have better luck, I believe, if you view your fundraising program from the eye of the company you are approaching.

Also, another thing that will help, is if you are able to offer your prospective donors different levels of sponsorship. Not all companies may be able to give $5,000, but they may be able to afford $1,000 or $500. If you go this route, make sure you are able to explain what each level of sponsorship provides. For example, a $5,000 donation might provide the sponsor a mention on all the charities marketing materials, a reserved table at an event or function, a mention in any tv or radio commercials. A lower dollar donation might provide 2/3 of those opportunities, and a small donation might consist only of a one-time mention in a thank you ad.

When you ask for a donation, the sponsor will want to know the name of the charity, its mission statement or function in the community, and whether or not there are any marketing opportunities associated with the donation. So be prepared to provide this information.
