  1. standing - just loop the [back] of the nose band threw it.

running - separate your reins and but one on each rein.

  2. Running or standing?

Running: slip it over the horses head and put the girth through the loop, your reins each go through the forked bit that have a ring each and then buckle your reins back up again.

Standing: Slip over the head and again slip the girth through the loop, the other end attaches to the noseband

  3. Depends what sort.

For a running martingale attach the neckstrap and breast strap around the horses neck and slip the girth through the breast strap at the bottom.

Undo the reins and slip them through both rings and do them up again.  The length should be that the rings should reach the horse's throat and should not come into play until the head comes above the angle of control.  The reins must have rubber stops on them to prevent the rings getting caught in horses teeth or bit.

A Standing martingale should be attached similarly in the first stage, but the nose band must either be a flash noseband or a cavesson.  The noseband at the back loops through the martingale and again the top end of the martingale must reach the throat when undone.  It is also not adviseable to jump in a standing martingale as head and neck movements could be restricted.

  4. what kind?

    standing, running, german?

(note there ARE at least 3 kinds to use)

standing- i do believe it's the nose band (dont quote me i've never used one and never wanted to use one, i dont see the point in using a standing martingale, but that's just how i was trained by my teachers.)

running-they attach around the riens, (unbluckle the riens and slip the round part of the martin gale thru.  and buckle them back up again)

german- i use this one*if i use one*. . . anyway, you have to have the right riens for them(they are a fabric with 3 derings on them) ... you attach the martingale around the girth like all the other german martingales and around the neck, then you run the right side thru the right side of the bit (it has to have a d-ring or ring around the side to run the martin gale thru the bit. i use a kimberwicke)  you hook it on the ring/setting you want it on the bridle. (i only use the 1st or 2nd d-ring, but again that's how i was taught, others may do something different)

here is a picture of it (it will explain it so much better to see it)

  5. what kind? standing or running?

  6. There is also an Irish martingale. This is just a 4"- 6" piece of leather with rings at either end. Undo your reins buckle, slip them through the rings and do up.
