I have read that the uppercut is the hardest punch to see coming and the hardest to avoid. How do you avoid getting hit in the bottom of your chin with an uppercut?

  1. There are four basic punches in boxing, JAB, HOOK, CROSS, UPPERCUT. The Uppercut CAN be the most difficult to avoid. but it depends on your opponent's ability to use it and also your defensive skills.  All other punches are variations of these 4 basic punches.

An uppercut is primarily an INSIDE punch.  That's why it can sometimes be difficult to see coming.  An outside uppercut, something most boxers shouldn't even use, is much easier to avoid.  It leaves you open for a counter.

Keep your chin tucked close to your chest.  IF an uppercut does land the effect can be lessened by this maneuver.

The best way to avoid an uppercut is to keep a tight defense, especially on the inside.  An opponent would have to be exceptionally talented to be able to land an uppercut from the outside.  Roy Jones was known for that but he had the speed to get away with it.

In inside uppercut can be the most powerful punch.  You can be seriously hurt if you're hit with it.  From the outside, moving your head helps if you time it right.  Keep your eye on your opponent's punches.  On the inside you have to be able to match your opponent's strength or come close to it.  If you can't take body shots well he can easily open your defense with body shots, leaving you wide open for an inside uppercut. Tyson was a master at this.

There are some ways to keep your opponent off balance and make it more difficult for him to use the uppercut.  Again, it helps to be able to match his strength.  The things you're able to do on the inside make a big difference.  If you can Parry some of his punches you can open his defense.  If he can parry your's he could do the same, thus leaving you open for the uppercut.

Again, Keep your chin Tucked close to your chest.

For a good example of what can happen if you use an outside uppercut, take a look at Evander Holyfield vs Buster Douglas.  Buster made a terrible, fundamental mistake.  He threw an uppercut from outside.  I don't know what he expected to hit but he left himself WIDE open and Evander easily avoided it and launched the most perfect right hand I've seen in a very long time.

Evander isn't very powerful but any punch can hurt you if you don't see it coming.  I couldn't draw a more perfect right hand on paper than the one Evander starched Buster with.  Buster dropped like a beached whale, blew snot on the canvas and was counted out in round 3.

    Stay in shape.

    Good luck.

  2. keep your guard up!  keep your elbows tucked tight against your body (avoid the A-frame with your elbows).  Do NOT get lazy on that.  Keep your eyesight good and parry those uppercuts.  do not PANIC and relax.

if you do not keep your guard up and your elbows are out you will EAT uppercuts for the entire fight and then a hook and its good night to you.

i dont know about the 'hardest punch to see coming'.  if you have poor eyesight/vision (medically speaking), if you're rushed, panicked or scared of your opponent and you fight with too much emotion then yes, ANY punch is hard to see.

  3. its not the hardest punch to see coming! or the hardest to avoid! weave and move your head more!!!! gosh!!!!!!!!!!

  4. By boobing and weaving to the right and to the left and also crossing your arm from right to the left shouder and your jaws will be covered ,

  5. Do the "peek-a boo style" technique.
