How do you balance chemical equations involving diatomics? Can the subcripts be altered for those?

    here are some

    Cl2 & NaI --> NaCl  & I2  ,  becomes:

    Cl2 & 2Na --> 2 NaCl & I2

    Cl2 & Al I3 --> Al Cl3  & I2  .... becomes:

    3Cl2  & 2 Al I3  --> 2 AlCl3  & 3 I2

    we won't alter the subscripts of the diatomic molecules, but once they become ions, they are no longer diatomic...

    & you use as many Cl- 's as you have positiveness in a Na+ , or a Al+3
