  1. Dont place a bowl in the cage because the water will become room temp and be too cold. Instead a little squirt bottle and fill it with warm water. If your parakeet opens his or her feathers he or she wants you to continue to squirt warm water. If he or she flys around the cage he or she doesnt like it. I hope i helped!!

and yes your right your bird is puffing up to clean himself but parakeets always love to clean themselves, even when they have been cleaning all day thats what parakeets spend hours doing daily. Parakeet owner so i know and ive studied everything about them too!

  2. place a shallow bowl of water in his cage, he will do the rest

  3. 1. If your parakeet is puffed up for a long period of time, them he's feeling cold, and if the temperature is warm and he feels cold, it means he's sick

    2. You can put a shallow bowl in the cage for him.  If wants to bathe, he will put his beak in the water to flick the water on himself and might puff up a few times (in this case, the puffing up is normal).

    3. If the weather is hot, you can VERY LIGHTLY spray/mist him with cool water, as this promotes grooming and preening.

  4. they have mini parakeet baths that you can put in their cage. make sure its room temp. youre parakeet will take care of the rest.

  5. you dont need to bathe them. they will if they need to in a shallow bowl of water

  6. just get like a bowl of cleen water and put it in the cage and the bird will get in on its own!

  7. birds dont puff up from feeling dirty. lol.

sometimes the puffing can be a sign of illness. please note i said sometimes. hard to know not having seen the bird. it could very well be nothing at all....they bird could be frustrated it can't bathe or possibly in a draft....lots of things could be that cause. most likely it isn't anything. how about finding a clip on bath tub that will allow the bird enough room to take a vigerous bath, they enjoy having room to flip their wings and beat the water to bathe. if this doesn't work and the bird does not improve might need to look at other possible problems. i do hope it works and that all it needs is a bath that would be the best outcome of all. best wishes good luck. this advice is given gladly with kindness and well wishes.
