How do you beat the school system in New York City?

My high school-age son presents me with valid reasons why he shouldn't attend public school anymore. I have previously home-schooled him in the past and I would like to continue. How do I reinstate him within the homeschooling program? I believe the school system might prevent me from doing that because they require money to pay for all of the various students that are home-schooled. What do you propose we do?

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Jennifer, a single mom.

  1. Jennifer seems like ur son or doughter would rather have home school then real school. but u have to find out why

he or she dont like school, maybe its the other kids, or maybe

its the rude teachers, or maybe he or she need more help

i suggest u finding out the reasons and when u do, dont find it

like a mom find it like a best friend, its better to find information like that, but if they tell u its kids, or teacher then i suggest changing schools or moving out to a better home and a better school, u could also call the broad and have a meeting, im sure u well find ways for ur child to attend school

or take some home schooling, but this is abnormal for a child not to like public school or high school, college and uni gets more rough down the road, talk to a counsler at her/him school and seee what they provide for u...hope this helps jennifer...

  2. I say make him go to public school, because school is not just a learning institution, it is also a social institution. He is already a step behind since he's been home-school thus far. But then agian, I knew some pople that were home schooled and when they went to high school they didn't know how to interact well with others and became outcasts (more or less) with most crowds. But they were a set of triplettes and acted really weird.

  3. Wow, Jennifer, sounds like your son is bright and self motivating.  He should do well homeschooling.

The school system cannot stop you from homeschooling.  It is your right as a parent to educate your child.  The school doesn't pay to homeschool students, but it will lose the funding it receives for that child.

Just make sure you know the NY state regulations on homeschooling, and you should have no problems.  Contact a local support group because they will have experience in NYC that may prove helpful to you.

    Good luck :D

  4. You need to find out the laws for the state you're in.  A good way to find out exactly what your child's convictions are, is to let him do the initial research for you.  If he can make a case that it's possible in the the state that you're in with little or no cost, then it might be wise to let him pursue his own destiny.  You'll have no blame.

    Start research at:

    Good Luck

  5. There is a great line from an 80's classic that fits: "Sometimes the only way to win, is not to play."

But, if you cannot homeschool; check out a book called Guerrilla Schooling.

  6. your only defence  is to prove the results of your labor.. if it were i would ask anyone who chalenges your ability and also chellenging the childs knowledge.. as far or as compared to others.

take a equevelency test.. tell the school that they should test  your child with the ninth grade final exams.. and i would not pay any fees for home schooling... they should give you a discount on your property taxes.. you are saving them money each student cost the school thousands of dollars.. ok gilermo.

  7. Hi Jennifer!

Here are the laws for New York:

If you just follow your state's requirements, you'll be fine.

    Good luck!
