How do you become a better flanker?

Thanks Hot Stomp, I am a regualar in my local team as a flanker or 8 and trialling at the moment for my county but I would like if possible to get into the county 'A' team which has a lot of good backrowers

  1. The back-row is the most important unit on a rugby field. They provide a platform for both defence and attack, setting the teams tempo and style. Yes, the other posistions are important too but often games come down to who wins the battle of the back rows. If you're playing openside make sure you clatter the fly half in the first 5 minutes, let him know you're there. Generally I would say, put the tackles in and every time you do try to turn the ball over, be dynamic in contact. Become an all round player, it is equally important to know how to have soft hands and how to change your running angle as it is to know how to ruck properly or lift in the lineout. Read the game, you can get to the break down quicker if you know what is going on around you. Probably most importantly, enjoy it while you're playing, love every single minute of it and you can't help but succeed. Godd luck!

  7. You need to be big, strong and fast.

    Your job is to get the ball from rucks or slow their ball down.  You need to be 1st to 90% of breakdowns.

    Quick speed is essential.

    As well as the ability to tackle and get to your feet quickly.

    As an ideal #7 you wont stop running and you will dictate the speed of the game by your actions on the ground.

    Fine line between perfection and cheating.

    it depends what you want to achive and what your weaknesses are design a training programme based on your weaknesses but remember to maintain your strengths at the same time also a good diet helps

    drink 500ml half an hr before training a litre during and a litre per kg of body mass after it really makes a difference also make sure you get lots of sleep!
