Can someone tell me the requirements to become a college instructor (or even high school)? Reason i'm asking is because i love advertising and would like to become an art director but i was thinking i could also teach advertising/marketing in college. How can this be done? Do i need to take additional classes other than for my major to get me a position as a teacher? I'm majoring in adverting/designing/arts right now. Thanks

  1. Don't classify high school and college instructors in the same boat.  They have different requirements and face different challenges.

For high school, you need to be certified by your state.  This almost always requires either a bachelors in education or a bachelors in anything, plus taking a certification program of about 1 year in duration after you graduate.  In some cases, you can work on certification while teaching under close supervision.  You need to be certified to teach the subject you want.  This means having the necessary coursework in the field and taking subject tests.

For college, the absolute minimum to teach as a lecturer is a masters degree.  However, lecturers earn pitiful money and so if you want to teach college full time you want to look into a tenured faculty position.  These are highly competitive careers so you're urged to have a doctoral degree.

  2. you must carry an advid desire for drinking alchol

  3. The minimum requirement for an instructor position in a college or university in the US is a master's degree with 18 graduate hours in the subject you will be teaching.  That would be 18 graduate hours in advertising and 18 graduate hours in marketing if you wanted to teach both.

Most colleges don't hire from the minimum qualification though and the PhD in the subject is preferred - it will be required for almost all full-time tenure track positions.

Teaching in high school is entirely different.  High school teachers need at least a  bachelor's degree and a state teaching certificate.  The teaching certificate qualification will require courses in secondary education and a minimum one semester of supervised student teaching.  Advertising/marketing isn't usually a teaching area specialty for high school teachers.

  4. Hummm... it's the old "Those who can't DO... TEACH"... huh?

You need an advanced degree... a Master's minimum to teach at any reputable institution.
