  1. The pathway to a cruise ship captain can take any number of paths but the main thing is you must learn many of the jobs on ships.  A few months ago Royal Caribbean announced the appointment of a woman as captain of one of its ships and gave her work history.  It included duty in various officer positions responsible for things like navigation, communications, etc., on various types of ships, Her service was not all on a cruise ship.  Some was on the ocean going cargo ships.

I am sure that you will needs some professional training before you start and then you have to learn various jobs on a ship and work your way up to captain.  More than likely you would be promoted to captain from within the ranks of the cruise ship officers.

Take a look at this web page on Royal Caribbean and look at the shipboard technical and nautical jobs.  :http://www.royalcaribbean.com/ourCompany...

  2. you start off at nautical college which you could do a university for 3 years. then you get a job on a ship as a deck cadet then you would have promotions all the way up to a captain (deck cadet > 3rd officer > 2nd officer > 1st officer > captain) you might have too look outside the company for promotion through the ranks or it could be internal promotion
