I am 18 and live in Utah, I haven't grown up around horses. I have ridden a bit and am good at it. I want to become an exercise rider or jockey and am wondering what I should do. I want to go to the jockey school in California but will that be enough? And is there any point in going to college for an associates degree or not?

  1. There is  trainer's in Utah, Look up the farms there,,

You start at a farm.. so you just have to move away !

But thats ok because you can earn money while you work

If your ridding skills are good, they Just might put you on a few easy horse's to see if you have what it takes

Watch the other riders really close ''always ""

Most farms have housing for their helpers,

If you are the right height and weight  ,

Or go to a school if you have the money== Chris Mc Caren.. I think  he is the best ,,

But I like to hire someone that has hands on training from a good farm ,,

New Mexico State has a racing Program , a good one too,

    Good luck

  2. There is a point in going to college.  Education.  It will be there with you and for you whatever your riding pursuits.  The more education you acquire the more you will enrich the quality of your life.

The business side of race riding is more complex and sophisticated than ever.  Education will be there to facilitate whatever challenges arise.

University of Arizona has an race track industry program which might interest you.

Locate the nearest thoroughbred breeding and training farm.  This will offer an opportunity to work and learn.  Good help is always in demand.

Thoroughbreds are all about the basics.  Prime time racing or bush tracks the basics will be the same.  Rehab work on older runners and working with young livestock will provide a variety of experience.

  3. getting a degree will always help, if your intrested in becoming a jockey or exercise rider. you shopuld go to a farm first, everyone needs to pay there  dues. a racing farm is your best bet to becoming a rider

  4. Step one....Move near a track.

Step two...Get a job working for a trainer or owner. Start at the bottom and work your way up the ladder. You may be shoveling sh*t for a while and exercising the horses early in the morning but will have the opportunity to learn while you're working.

Go to a farm in Utah..

    Look up David James.

If a Morman , you will have better luck in UTAH.

  6. i got no clue on having a degree i dont think so. You should look up thoroughbred farms around you or out of stateand see if they need any barn help  and you could see if you could live there. I think you need a jockeys licsense to race.
