Frankly you've no chance. It's the Government that runs the railways by setting out the way in which the franchise system works, how everyone gets paid and the way in which the train operators and the infrastructure companies relate to each other. I agree that the current system could be greatly improved upon, but there are so many amateur theorists who seem to think they know better but have no understanding or experience of the railways and an equal number of crackpot ideas.

However, if you want to become a manager at Nitwit Rail rather than THE manager of Nitwit Rail, you could do a lot worse than go to University and then into their graduate programme.

Mainly, you need to develop the Network Rail Management Mindset, which is that the customers are there for the convenience of the Railway, rather than the other way round.
