  1. you start at the bottom, as a stable boy, then move up the chains. gallopers, trotters, conditioning, so on and so on.

  2. There are alot of things you need, but experience is the key.

  3. I know that in the state of West Virginia you have to get an assistants license.  After that you have to have 3 letters of recommendation, then you have to take a written test (it's really hard from what I've heard), and then you have to take a barn test.

  4. You start off working in a racing stable and work your way up.

Here in GB it is common for trainers to advertise for "Pupil Assistants", these are usually young men/women in their 20s that have worked for a few years in a racing yard and want to learn more about actual training.  Once you have been a pupil assistant you can get a job as an assistant trainer and eventually (after a good 10 years or so in the business) set out as a trainer on your own.

Here in GB you have to take various tests to get a trainers licence as well as proving you have a minimum amount of money (I think £10,000) in the bank so that you can pay wages, vet bills, etc before you start winning races.

This link from the British Racing School shows you what the main trainers course involves:  http://www.brs.org.uk/Courses/Trainers_C...

  5. go to the racing office and take a state test
