I have been thinking about becoming an insurance agent but have no idea about what is required to start selling insurance. I was thinking about health or auto insurance. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions. I do not know if my state makes a difference but I am in Louisiana

  1. you must attend 40 hrs of classroom time and then pass your states exam.  you can either do this on your own, or try finding an agency to sponser you.  thats what I did when i first started out.  i was working as a receptionist in an agency and the owner paid my class time and state exam cost and i agreed to work for her for 1 yr in repayment.

  2. You pass a test, then find a company willing to let you sell their insurance.

  3. Depends on the state.

You'll need to start with an insurance license in the field you're interested in...

    Life & Health

Property & Casualty (Houses & cars)

    Medicaire Supplement & Long-term care

    are the 3 most likely

If you look in the newspaper & find a carrier hiring that mentions NO EXPERIENCE - they'll often pay for your license - especially Life Insurance companies

  4. Save up your money.  You will need it to get through the lean times.

The lean times may last two years.

Well, they will come...that is certain.  How long they last varies.

Pick the right company to go with.  You will want residuals.  That means that as long as the person keeps the coverage, you will continue to receive commissions.

My company is always looking for new agents.  But it would be too tough for a youngster.  You would go for months without any income, hoping that your will pass the exam and the background investigation.

This is a great field, if you can last.

    A terrific field.

You will really help a lot of people.
