I hear scary things about all the iceburgs melting and natural tragities happening that have never happened before, What does all this mean? Can recycling really help the world and the ozone? Because I do recycle.

  1. Our world may end for humans but the world itself won't end for some time.

The moon is the earths gyroscope. Its what causes it to tip and tilt. The moon moves away from the earth about an inch and a half a year.

In a billion years the moons gravitational influence will be gone. It will be to far away. The earth will tip and tilt willy-nilly to the gentle tugs of far away planets.

There will be no poles or equator. The earth will be fraught with extremely violent storms. It will be a hellish place to live. The only living organisms that will have any peace are the creatures in the deep ocean.

In about 3 billion years after that the sun will have exhausted its fuel. Lights out!

  2. some GM pathogen escaping a lab.

  3. What do you mean by "world" and "end?"

Like, the Earth being utterly destroyed?  Proton decay, or the sun expanding into a red giant..

The Earth being rendered incapable of supporting all life?  When the sun turns into a red giant.

The Earth being incapable of supporting large animals like us?  Probably much sooner.

All large animals being wiped out?  Next major comet strike, maybe.  Or after a supervolcano, or any of the other things that they like to fret over on the Discovery and History channels.

Civilization being unable to sustain itself in any form?  Take whatever would wipe out all large animals, and divide it in two.

Our current civilization ending and not immediately spawning a new one?  Yeah, climate change could do that, if severe enough.  It probably won't be.  A major nuclear conflict could, too, but it won't.

As for what to do about it...may I ask how old you are?  Because I really hope you haven't graduated high school yet.  (What are they teaching kids these days?)

Ozone depletion is a separate problem from the greenhouse effect.  The Greenhouse Effect is caused by so called greenhouse gases, which prevent heat from the sun from reflecting off the Earth into space.  Ozone depletion is caused principally by Chloroflourocarbons, a class of chemicals that used to be used in air conditioners, spray cans, and in making styrofoam.  They were banned in most industrialized countries 30 years ago.  In almost every use, they have been replaced.  People were still freaking out about styrofoam and spray cans YEARS after they both stopped using CFCs.

CFCs are ALSO a greenhouse gas, however, and therein lies some of the confusion.  Some more comes from the fact that global warming can change the rate of ozone production.

The ozone layer has been recovering for the last 11 years.

Recycling will not directly help the ozone layer.  In fact, by reducing energy use (compared to mining and manufacturing new materials) it could contribute to reduced global warming, which could SLOW the recovery of the ozone layer.

This doesn't mean that recycling is a bad thing.

Educate yourself before you start getting worried about things.  You're really mixing things up here.  The Wikipedia category on pollution is pretty well organized.  That is a good place to start, and one of the best central repositories for ALL such issues.

  4. Our world will not end at all but it will be judged by the tribulation(wrath of God) it's what our pastor said but you will be saved If you obey the Lord called Rapture

  5. I think there will be food shortages, climate change, resources will be used to the point of nothing, the land will be over farmed to the point of no nutrients, we will all panic and start fighting for whatever we can hog, then war will errupt between normally peaceful countries because the economy will crash and we will eventually live under marshal law, waiting on starvation or desease or nuclear fallout to take our lives.

Much like what is happening now.  Yes, recycling is nice.  But, we have to change the way we consume and think about other consumers around the world...and it has to happen now.

  6. I try not to think about that.

I like to focus on how we can prolong our Earth's life by donig things like recycling!

Not littering, walking to school/work, anywhere that wont burn a hole in your shoe.

Geeze our country needs all the exercise it can get anyway.

  7. there are many people who believe the world will end in war or a natural disaster.  if you look up the date 12/21/2012, you will find many different versions of the last days. I personally believe it will be a change in the way we view things . A different way of seeing the human race and our world. Maybe we will find life on another planet and see we are not alone and that changes man. Or maybe we have an epidemic that wipes out 2/3 of the worlds population and the survivors have to start over. Who knows? But the date does seem to match ALOT of prophecies. please, just look up the date, you will be very surprised.

  8. The big crickets will eat us and scream jihad!!!! Are brains will smash on the concrete and dogs will l**k up the excretment.

Look at the earth click on it my pretty this is what will happen

  9. I don't think a world can 'really' end until the inevitable getting sucked into the sun in about 3000 years.

Natural tragedies happen all the time. The comet that killed the dinosaurs, the plague and the Ice age to name a few.

Did you mean the end of the humans? because certainly we will die out before the sun consumes the planet, but the planet itself?

Mars is a wasteland but it's still there.

  10. an overpopulation of platypus's will take over and rule the world

  11. Read the book of Revalations. It's fairly specific.

  12. The world will end when the sun engulfs us billions of years from now. As for the human race, we will eventually evolve to adapt to many different scenarios, but I would say it will end in the next few hundred thousand years.

  13. When the Sun becomes a red giant, it will expand out to the orbit of Mars, completely engulfing and vaporizing Earth. This will occur in about 5 billion years, so the next president should start making contingency plans.

  14. like in ghostbusters!

recyclingbarely helps. basically, recycle paper so we don't have to cut down trees so we have more trees so we convert carbon dioxide into oxygen. no effect really.

plastic degrades (becomes one with soil) in 500 years. i dont really know how that helps.

  15. Haha. The results are unstoppable sadly. You can recycle, yes, but it only slows it down, the sad truth is, we messed up. Tho it wont come soon, it will come, and id hate to be alive when it does come around, we messed up the earth and our children, or our childrens children or whatever will be paying for it. Sad but true. the Truth is, as it stands, nothing can stop it. It can be slowed, but it will eventually happen

  16. I don't know if earth will ever be completley disintegrated, but I think that it will gradually become less and less liveable. Possibly those who survive the natural disasters of the next 50-70 years will either starve to death from the lack of food, or die from heat or disease around 2150. I think that there will be a handful of people who adapt themselves tot the heat and disease and find a small area of the world that is less disatouros then others...possibly somewhere near a lake or ocean with a temperate climate. They'll evolve and try to repopulate the earth but it will be to difficult and they'll die out by 2200. but the earth will continue to rotate the sun, a hot mass of garbage and concrete. But it was good while it lasted, no?

  17. Nuclear Holocaust.

  18. I don't really know but my science teacher told me sooner the sun will explode and when it does its going to hit earth and the planet will explode. I would rather live life then think about this.

  19. yes, recycle definitely helps the earth. but I don't think it'll stop the world from ending though. I mean, everything that has a beginning has an end. God doesn't have a beginning so he won't ever end (it's okay if you don't believe in God). And so I think the world is going to end in a much dramatic way; like fiery way....

  20. THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE Read the Book of Revelation(in the Bible) or the Left Behind books. All of the events happening now like global warming are setting the way for the end.

  21. I would say that it will end for something related to our galaxy like big comets falling from the sky or the explotion of the sun or a big star that will take out of balance the earths orbit.

  22. the poles will switch

then the tectonic plates won't be stable

there will be massive earthquakes and volcanic eruptions

    we will all die.

ooh!  the mayan calender says that the world will end as we know it on 12/12/12.

  23. i really hope it's alien invasion

i want us to go down in style, an alien invasion would be worth it lol

  24. It wont end-just change! Don't stress and keep recycling and doing your part.

  25. an asteroid named EROS is expected by scientists to pass near earth in December 2012 as the Mayan and the Egyptians civilizations have predicted as well. Although the asteroid is not an earth crosser, it is said to be very possible that it could alter the magnetic poles of the earth eventually fluctuating it back and forth creating catastrophic geological and meteorological events which is also theorized to have wiped out the dinosaurs into extinction...

  26. well ill lay it out

the only natural way the world will end like no more people end

is if we got hit buy a rouge disease or a meteor.. because if we have nuclear wars there will always be survivors. ...

and yes global warming is real and if we all recycle and save energy it will add up and we can slow down the process

    i too recycle.

and if anyone else has another way they think the world will end email me?  and dont say anything about 2012 or 23

  27. Well, according to the Mayan calender the world will end in 2012- a few days before Christmas in December. It just so happens that their calender is the most precise one ever created. However, their calender ends in 2012 when an alignment of stars, occurs over our planet Earth. This alignment has never occurred before so who knows?

  28. Geez , are there not more cheerful topics and questions  to discuss on here other than how the world will come to an end  ?

The world is not going to come to an end because people don't recycle enough . The world will come to an end because God decides it's time  .

  29. there has been soo many theries and none of them came true.

this world is not coming to an end any time soon, definetly not in your lifetime. :]

  30. if mcain wins we will go into war and we will all die and if no one fixs the global warmign issue that will kill us to...in ny its freekign sprign righrt now or summer and its liek 20 degrees the past few days WTF...

  31. All the disasters will not be the end of Earth.  Earth will stop being a living planet when the sun begins to cool.  You have about 10 billion years to plan for that.

Edit:  Hey folks, there is a lot of difference between when the Earth will end and when humanity will end.
