How do you block calls from public services?

Question

I currently live in the UK, and I applied for some stuff online and gave my home number, now I constantly get harassed by calls at home and on my mobile, is there any way to stop this, every time someone calls I ask them to take my name off the system, but there must be millions of these sales teams.

If you are receiving "cold calls" I would register with the Telephone Preference Scheme-

If the calls are from a company you have been a customer of, then I would contact them direct and ask to be removed from their lists.
