How do you book a seat for an airplane flight online?

I have booked the tickets online, but not the seat. It did say someting about waiting 24 hours for conformation, do I book the seats then? I need to book the seat ahead of time, because a friend of mine once didnt book ahead of time, and her flight was overbooked and she was barely able to get the last seat. I used expedia.com and my flights are on american airlines

Most of the major airlines will let you book seats after purchase is made.  Just go to the website of the airlines you will be flying on, not where you bought it, and check out their seating options.   Typically they ask you for your ticket info and then guide you from there.  Good Luck!

hi Ive never been able to book the seat on line but only the ticket,the only way i know of booking the seat is to get to the airport early say 2hrs-2 1/2 hrs and book in then,or on one of there on line self booking in terminals which you can choose your seats at that point.
