alright in the beginning of the race, when the signal go to number 2 start your engine.

Once the signal say GO! You should get a speed boost. It best to practice this move first if your beginner in Mario Kart.

At the beginning of a race u need to hold down the acceleration button rite as the "2" is fading  hold it for da rest of da countdown (wich isn't long)  and you will get a short boost.  

Also,  to get a boost after falling off da track  u need to press da acceleration button rite as you hit/come down to da track   (after being fished back by da dude in da cloud)

In every Mario Kart game, around 1 second after the countdown starts, in this game when the 2 appears, hold the accelerate button to get a head start. Since there are 12 racers, this game doesn't get you into 1st with this, so it's a bit harder.
