  1. Well, you sorta have yourself a sour situation.  It is good that you want to know how to do it, but I would want to learn how to train a horse BEFORE you work on him.  Experimenting on your horse could possibly ruin him if you don't know what you are doing.  You should also know that a successfully trained horse needs YEARS of training.  It's not like a 2 month deal then your ready to go show.  You have to get your horse used to ANYTHING and EVERYTHING!  I have a four year old mare that I have been training for over a year now and, although she is doing great, I would have to say shes got a lot of learning left.  When training a horse you don't just go out and put a saddle on her and sit on her back and ride off into the sunset.  Patience is the key to horse training.  There is a very long process to go through.  I'm not saying you can't send your horse to a sixty day trainer, but you sure won't get that far if your a first time horse owner.  There is so much more to horses then walk, trot, lope, stop, and turning.  There is the teaching of yielding at the hindquarters, backing, pivoting, sidepassing, bomb-proofing and much more.  I'm not trying to discourage you.  I think it is great that you want to know how to train a horse.  I'm just telling you though that there is no way you can get your answer in one day.  I would recommend sending your welsh mare to a trainer while you study horse training and then maybe try it on your next horse.  If you do want to know how to train a horse, I have one name for you...Clinton Anderson.  He is the most brilliant, gentle horse trainer in today's society.  Pat Parrelli is also great but his methods may take too long for some.  I personally, like him but sometimes I have some trouble.  However, if you have the time then I would recomend either of the two trainers.  If you want to train your horse quickly, go to Downunderhorsemanship.com.  If you choose to go with another trainer, then don't also do his methods because every trainer is different.  He has videos, tack, books, and even a television show that will help you.  Good look and I hope everything works out for you!!

  2. If she is  a totally green mare and you have no idea how to break a horse then my best advise to you is have a professional  do it.  Most trainers take about 30 days to green break a horse.  You will still have plenty of work left to do after green breaking, but if this is really from scratch you might be in trouble if you try it yourself

  3. How old is the mare?

Where have you got her from?

IF you have got her from a dealer, maybe you should exchange her for something you can ride now?

Re Breaking her:  Send her to a professional yard or pay a professional to come to you.  Its not just a matter of breaking her in, there is a lot of schooling over the next few years that you will have to undertake - I would suggest that if you keep this mare, once she is broken and begins her schooling, have regular lessons on her so that you can both learn to work together and then when you ride her midweek, you are doing the right things with her for that stage of her schooling.

  4. haha well i have a 15hh mare welsh sec d also and im telling you they can be a right handful especially when they havnt been broken and by the sounds of it you arnt that experienced at breaking in a horse?! when i got my welsh i sent her to a trainer this took about 2 months then i got her back it cost me £600 and she is perfect she does anything i ask her to do so i suggest this is an easier way however it can be expensive the person who trained my horse was friends with me ages before so she said she would do it for me at only £600 so it could cost alot more depending on who you want to do it if you just look around there should be loads in your area if you check for adverts in horsey shops or online and compare the prices! but if you want to do it yourself id suggest you do alot of research on how to break a horse before doing it dont just jump straight in, if you do this wrong it could mess up the mare forever.  good luck with it and i hope she turns out to be a good welshie, they are amazing horses if broken and taught well!! =]

  5. Well no offense, i dont think you should of bought her without knowing how to break her in! ! !

  6. if i were you, i wouldn't have got her if you don't know what to do. experienced horsepeople will have the knowledge to know what to do and how to approach it.

  7. Sorry but you should not have this horse.

You need a pro to do it. Get one asap.

It's not a job for a beginner. You can end up with a 4 footed nightmare from h**l on a rope.

Honestly this not good. Please find a trainer and learn too.

It really upsets me to think that a complete novice can buy a horse and think they can train it. How irresponsible is that!

It's people like you that keep me in business!

    Rant over.

Take an unbroken horse + a compleat novis owner = horse with little or no respect for humans or anything else OR one that is afraid of moving because the novis has got SO angry at their own incompitece they shout/beat the horse.

    Ranting over (sorry)

  8. I don't want to be mean but why the h**l did you get an unbroken mare if you do not know anything about breaking?  The best thing you could do now is to find a good trainer for your horse and listen to what they say.  Only then will you be able to give your horse a decent start in her ridden life

  9. you have no idea how to break her in?

WHY THE **** DID YOU BUY HER THEN?

  10. Some advice. If your a beginner, DO NOT take on a young horse or a horse that is not broke until you have LOADS of experience!!!!!!!!  I found out the hard way. Find a trainer in your local area to help you, or if you wanna go natural, find a parelli Professional in your area to help you.  I strongly recommend going the parelli route. I have, and have NO regrets doing so.

  11. Why the h**l did you get a young horse if you didnt know how to break it. You obviously shouldn't be getting your own horse if you don't know what to do with them. And your looking to get another horse in your other question!!!

  12. You have stated in your previous questions that you have your own riding stables and have staff working for you. Why not get one of them to show you how to break the mare? Unless of course you were not telling the whole truth.

  13. Have you heard that add on the radio?

WIFE: Bob, why is there a bull in our yard?

BOB: Oh, honey, I'm going to ride it. I learnt how to online in 15 minutes.

    Somethings you can't learn online.

Sell the horse or pay for it to get trained properly. Don't make the horse suffer by accidentally training it wrong and s******g it over for life. You shouldn't have bought it if you didn't know how to train it.

This horse is dependent on you for more than just food and water. To make its life ok, and be bought by good owners, work for its food, and get food, it needs to be trained properly to get that.

Lets face it - untrained or mistrained 7-10 yearolds aren't wanted by anyone. Don't try and train it yourself it you don't know what you are doing. Pay for some proper training. You after all, bought it, and are responsible for its life, which means it future, which depends on its training now.

  14. If you dont know how to break her, you shouldnt have bought an unbroken mare - simple as that.

If you try yourself you could ruin her and end up with something that bucks, rears and all sorts.

Get a professional trainer to break her until you learn how to.
