 Its not that hard to break an awkward silence on msn, just throw up an interesting message, and there you will recieve a reply. You can ask interesting questions from the other person, and you would definitely recieve, a reply.

just say somethin randon like.. do u like banana flavoured bacon? Lol then just say wuu2, or ask them wat they r doing 2moro, or ifs its a boy/girl u like just ask them wat kinda boys/girls do u go for ? lol i dunoo thats what iv done and it helped =]
