Question:

How do you breathe while you're running?

I am starting cross country and I play soccer, so the training isn't that hard on my legs, but breathing is my worst problem. I have to concentrate really hard breathing in my nose and out my mouth but it's very loud and hard. How can I help myself breathe easier.

  1. try to get a rythm in breaths. or breathe along to a tune. i know it sounds crazy but thats wat i do for my 6 mile races. dont breathe with ur nose. use ur mouth.

  2. do NOT breathe in through your nose

    people will tell you that

but if your running hard you need all the oxygen you can get

so breathing through your mouth is so much better!

in time you won't need to breathe as hard

    even if your going fast

and thats when you can use your nose

but thats only when it gets easy for you

    just so you know

most people naturally breathe in for two steps

    and out for two steps

    and it obviously repeats :-P

but don't think about it too much

it will come naturally as you get more comfortable running

    so just relax

and if you want to focus on anything

try to slow your breathing down :-)

  3. breathe in 4 steps out 4.

  4. Breathing control for fast paced sports like soccer means that your breathing will be the same. You need to start running distance from now on. Start by doing a 90% all out sprint then slow down and go into a medium paced jog for about 20 minutes. Do this everyday and your breathing will come natural. Also swimming helps a lot to.
