Question:

How do you breed parakeets?

I have 2 parakeets that I've had for a year. I got 2 in July 2007, but one died just after four weeks. Then, I bought a new one in August. I've had them for a year and I think it is time to breed them. The female parakeet is 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 months older than the male parakeet. Does this create any problems? What do I do to get them into the breeding "mode"? I know for sure they like each other because they touch beaks and get their heads scratched by each other. What do I feed them and maybe the chicks during this time? What do I put inside the nest box? Please answer and I will give you 10 points.

  1. First you are truly not ready to breed, These are simple questions you are asking. Breeding is NOT easy, it's more heartache and pain then anything else.

DO you have a place for the babies to go when they're fully weaned? are you keeping them all? a budgie can have any from  4-6 eggs per clutch BUT can have more I have a pair who laid 9 eggs in her 2nd clutch 5 hatched the last 4 had babies in them but they were to weak to hatch out and died in the shell

Do you know how to hand feed if the parents don't do the job ? If you don't know how to hand feed and mix the formula correctly you can KILL the baby bird(S), if you make the formula to hot you can give them crop burn

the pair has to be old enough 12 months (18 months is even better) and fed on a Good quality diet of Fresh foods, such as veggies, hard boiled egg shell and all, high Quality pellets (such as Zupreem,or Roudy Bush) Some Seeds of high Quality, They must have a cuttle bone, mineral block (i use 2 in 1's)

when a female is in condition her cere (the fleshy part above her beak where the nostrils are) will be a dark brown chocolate color , a male will have a deep dark blue waxy looking cere

the nest box has to be made of non scented wood (I use plain  unscented  ply wood and for bedding i use Care Fresh bedding

You need to do tons of research, on breeding before you even set a pair up. this is not something you just jump into feet first. it's takes alot of time, money, and patience to breed.

  2. Well i had parakeets and i know all about them and there breading habits. first off if you want them to breed you must give them some time to let them get to know each other.this process will take a few weeks to months but definitely not more than 1 month. second when you feel that they are comfortable with each other and are good friends buy them a ready made nest that you can either get at pet co or pet smARt and put the nest in the cage. . during this stage it would take at least a few weeks to about 2 months for them to start breeding and a a couple of weeks for the eggs to hatch. when you find out that the birds ar laying eggs you would want to make sure that the breeding area is in a warm place or in a incubator. if you want them to breed you must first have the money and perorations for it CZ the incubator will cost a few hundred dollars plus the time to make sure the eggs are OK as well as the parents.

  3. go on line and look  up on how to breed a parakeet.

  4. well all u got to do is put a nest in the cage the birds will take care all the rest if they dont get the food the baby budgies need u have to hand feed them -- sighns of mating feeding eachother and and touching beaks they lay 1-2 eggs  day they usualy lay 4-6 eggs and the mating age for parakeets is 4 mounths so they should be deffinitly ready -- good luck with the hachlings!
