  1. Hey Nicole,I have a "recipe" for doggie toothpaste that I'd like to share with you guys! Mix together Baking Soda and Water to make a paste. Gently scrub the teeth with a soft brush or with gauze wrapped around your finger. **Remember that human toothpaste can upset your dog's stomach. There are many doggy tooth brushes at pet stores but you can't just pick any one here is some advice on how to pick:http://www.expertvillage.com/video/2681_...

How to brush your Dog's Teeth

Step 1 - Select an appropriate time

Find a quiet, convenient time when you and your dog are both relaxed.

Step 2 - Acquaint your dog with the process.

For the first few sessions don't even use a toothbrush. Gently stroke the outside of  her cheeks with your finger.  After she becomes comfortable with that, place a dab of toothpaste on your finger and let her taste it.  We usually suggest starting with C.E.T. poultry flavored toothpaste, because pets like the taste..

Step 3 - Introduce the Toothbrush

Place a small amount of toothpaste on the brush.  In a slow circular motion, brush one or two teeth and the adjoining gum line.  The purpose of this step is to get your dog accustomed to the feel of the brush.

    Step 4 - Begin Brushing

Over the next several days, gradually increase the number of teeth brushed.  It is important to eventually brush the rear teeth where plaque and tartar have a greater tendency to accumulate.  Go slowly and gently.  Stop brushing when you decide to stop, before your dog begins to fuss.  If she learns to dislike the procedure and finds out that fussing makes you stop quicker, then this brushing business is going to get harder, not easier.

Build up to about 30 seconds per side.  Dogs don't get much tartar on the inside surfaces of their teeth, so you only need to worry about the outside surfaces   Be sure to brush the big teeth way in back.

Make tooth brushing a pleasurable experience

Proceed slowly and gently.  Stop each session while it is still fun and   lavishly praise your dog afterwards.  She will soon start looking forward to tooth brushing and it will become a pleasant activity for both of you.

  2. You get the tooth brush and paste from the pet store.  They make special tooth paste for dogs, don't use human paste.  I use a finger brush on my dog and he doesn't mind it at all.  It's  a rubber finger type that fits on the index finger.  You put the paste on the end and put it in the side of the mouth and rub it back and forth on the teeth.  Very easy to do.  You have to get your dog use to it but it doesn't take long.  Let him look and smell the brush first and taste the toothpaste. It usually has a peanut butter flavor which they like.

  3. You can get them from most pet stores.  Be sure to only use toothpaste made for pets...they tend to ingest it and human toothpaste can be toxic to animals if ingested.  Between brushings, try dental treats to keep your dog's teeth and gums clean and healthy.  Bright Bites are a great brand that are designed just for that and have the VOHC seal of approval.

  4. You can buy the toothbrush and toothpaste at any pet store.  It's pretty easy to do, because it tastes good to them.  My lab used to love one that tasted like beef, my shih tzu likes the mint flavor.

  5. My dog says "forget about it" so I add Oxyfresh to his water and give him Science Diet t/d food for snacks. It has horrible ingredients, but is really good for cleaning dog teeth.
