How do you build a deck?

Also check with your local building/zoning dept. SOme have a preplanned deck spcifications. In northern VA if you build a deck according to the county specifications you don't (generally) need a building permit. THe spcifications show all about connections, type of wood bla,bla,bla.

Go to Home Depot / Lowe's, etc. and get a book. This will walk you through the basics and help you decide if you can tackle it yourself.

Generally, decks lower than 3' are easy, higher ones need more planning to make them stable. Higher ones also need to be permitted in most places, which means stamped plans, which means... probably not the best choice for your first deck project.
