I understand that you stated simple as your motive, so that is what I will base my answer on. First I would say that it is very expensive to actually build an RC Aircraft. If you just want to make a small cessna, it will cost anywhere arround $150 - $1000. Again this is just for a small one. The most important thing to remember is that ARF means that more will be needed to get it off the ground, and RTF means "Ready to Fly." I know that you said that you want to actually build it, but here is a link for an RTF plane:

However I will warn you that this will cost a lot more!!! If you scroll down on that page, you will see that there is a list of things needed to complete the setup. You also have your option of gas or electric. You can also go to:

and search for your self for a model you like. If you put some time and effort into it, I think that you could build one yourself, and have a lot of fun doing it!
