How do you build a social website like "myspace"?

I'm interested in building a social website. Will building the site be similar to building a non-interactive website, or is it a whole different ballgame? Can you suggest any good how-to books or websites on the topic? Thanks!

It's a whole different ball game.

Drupal is a website framework developed specifically for community projects and works out of the box. You will need to install user modules to allow your users to send each other emails, chats etc.

Drupal will take some time to learn, but has everything you need and is a popular choice for social network sites.

It is free opensource software written in php.
