How do you build an apartment in "The Sims2"?

I have the "The Sims 2 Apartment Life" expansion pack, but everytime I try to build an apartment it ends up as a multi-story, single family house.

After building the apartment building the way you want it, open up the cheat box and then enter "changelotzoning apartmentbase" without the quotes, save and exit to the neighborhood and then move in with a family.

You need to claim apartments just like University and dorms.

Make sure you are using the proper door or door matt that allows sims to rent the apartment. Like in University your sims need to claim the place they live in. If you use the regular door it will just become a house.

I haven't built one yet but I noticed when my sim renter her own apartment the door was red and had a matt in front of it at the entrance. Like a welcome matt..  Look through your build objects in doors and find the right one.
