  1. Relax your body, timing, bend knees,  body rotation, and more importantly is wrist snapping is the number one contributor to your serving speed.

  2. It's all in the technique, not so much your physical strength.  I was one of the smallest guys on varisty in high school, but more people had trouble returning my serve than most of the the other guys' serves.

It's all in your toss placement, transfer of weight, wrist snap, and head speed.

The toss should be a little in front of you, but it should be a straight toss.  Basically, if you let it fall back down, it should land back in your tossing hand.  You shouldn't throw it in any direction.  That'll just cause inconsistency.

This toss placement forces you to get your weight through the ball.  Your body should explode into the serve.  If you do it right, you should find yourself a foot or so past in from the baseline after your serve.

Wrist snap and head speed are kind of related.  The wrist snap forces the ball to start with a downward trajectory.  The head speed is part of what gives the power to your serve.  To maximize head speed, keep the racquet moving during your whole motion.  Even when it's up behind your head, use a little looping motion to keep it moving.  You lose a lot of momentum if you let it stop when it's behind your head.

Other than that, it's just practice.  I wish I could be there to show you what to do, because explaining it doesn't really do it justice.  Pay attention to the small details of somebody else's serve, and see if you can mimic those.

  3. Even very slight people can hit an effective serve...its all in the timing, and the wrist.

    1.  Toss the ball slightly out over the court.

    2.  Develop a rocking motion that moves your body into the ball as you swing.

    3.  Take the racket back fully by bending your elbow in a 'scratch your back' motion.

    4.  Use your wrist to accelerate the racket into the ball, hitting slightly up on the ball.

All this takes practice, but it works!

  4. well it mostly depends upon your timing.if you time well you can hit the ball very hard

  5. Serving power has nothing to do with brute strength.  It has more to do with good technique and wrist snap, which is why most often you'll find that guys who are tall and thin, like Ivo Karlovic, John Isner, and even Novak Djokovic have such great serves.

  6. It's all to do with technique.. heres some things you can try to improve on it:

Throw the ball higher at the start.

Get your back to the ball whilst throwing it up (watch mcenroe on youtube and you will understand what i mean).

When swinging the racket start low, bring it up behind you and over the top to strike the ball - like a large circular motion.

When striking the ball strike it at its maximum point, with your arm full extended to get a large lever, which increases power.

Bring your whole body round as you strike the ball, transferring your weight.. which gets your body weight behind the shot.

When you make contact with the ball flick your wrist forward, you would be surprised by the difference this makes!

Follow through in the direction you want the shot to go, which will be into the box.. aim the ball down the way.

Most importantly don't try it 10 times and decide you can't do, keep at it and it will come. It took me almost 1 month to perfect my serve and i have to practice still to make sure it stays at a high standard.

    Good Luck!

  7. do you're friends have longer arms?  i'm fairly tall and linky so i can generate more power with my longer arms than my friends who are stronger than me. also, make sure you're hitting the sweet spot.

  8. The timing is important, but the most important thing is where you throw your ball with your hand, because it determines if you will hit it hard or not so much
