Question:

How do you burn up an A/C compressor?

I live in an apt that was built in the early '70's. The unit has an ancient Chrysler AirTemp a/c unit. Furnace is new. The unit leaks freon and has to be charged by maintence about once a month. I know it's illegal to keep charging it, but they don't seem to care. Is there something that I can do to help the condensor/compressor to finally bite the dust? My electric bill is enormous because it runs 24/7 to keep the house around 72 degrees. Any ideas?

  1. This worked for me. let the temperature get to about 80 degrees in your house. Then call them and say that the unit was making sparks like it's going to catch a fire. When they come out, show them how hot it is inside. But turn it back on right before they come so they'll think it was on all the time, but that it's just not cooling. keep doing this. Evrytime they sy they have fixed it and to let it run, turn it off right after they leave and let it get hot again. They're not going to stay there all day and see if it gets cool. try it. It may work for you like it did for me.

  2. 72!!!!!! You must be freezing!!!! Run it up to 75-76 and give the poor old thing a break!!!!! Not to mention your electric bill!!!!!

  3. take an ice pick or a B.B. gun an shoot the outside coil WARNING there will be a cloud of gas so you want to get the h**l out of there quick the icepick is cheap an easy to hide just poke a good size hole in the OUTSIDE unit best of luck and dont get caught theirare laws aganst these things you know

  4. yeah use an ice pick.... that will be smart. It shouldnt be to much longer and the unit will start to do what they call "slugging", basically the liduid refrigerant will back up into the suction line and the compressor is only meant to compress gas not liquid. You could also tell them that you know if the unit has a leak and they are required by the EPA to fix a leak after adding a pound or more in a one seaon period without fixing the leak. It carries a 25,000.00 fine to knowingly vent refrigerant into the air. If they havent fixed a leak it is probally due to the fact the leak is in the coils itself and that is only able to be repaired by replacing the unit. Good Luck... might want to even call the fair housing athourity in your area.

  5. You could call the "EPA" and report them. That would solve your problem without you having to break the law. Good luck!
