  2. You need not calculate it;if you just know how to read a barometer which automatically measures the atmospheric pressure,that is enough. You get the value.

    On the other hand,if the place where the barometer is kept is situated at a higher elvation and if you want to reduce the value to the mean sea level(ie, calculating what would be the pressure if the place were to be at sea level, for comparison purposes),then you have to calculate it using a formula.
