  1. Roughly 60% (2/3 body mass) of your body is water. Around 40% (2/3 of TBW) of that is intracellular (contained in cells), 20% (1/3 of TBW) is extracellular. Of the extracellular body water, ~16% is interstitial (in tissues) and ~4% is in your vascular system. Multiplying the body weight x 0.6 finds the volume of the total body water in an individual, which you use to multiply by the appropriate fraction to find the volume in any particular compartment.
