How do you calculate chess ranks?

  4. If you mean chess ratings i can tell you how it used to be and probably hasn't changed in any significant way.

    Your first 25 games determine your initial rating (till then it is called a preliminary rating).

    For each win in the 25 games you average in your opponents rating plus 400 points (2 classes).  For each loss you average in your opponents rating minus 400 points.  For each draw you average in your opponents rating.

    Once you have an established rating your rating goes up or down based on a formula.

    If you win you get 16pt + 0.04*(opponents_rating - your_rating)

    If you lose then you lose what your opponent gains (see above).

    if you get a draw then your_new_rating = your_curr_rating + 0.04(opponents_rating - your_curr_rating)

    -- a draw could cause you lose points

    All of this being said, the USCF (USCHESS) has been known to play with these formulas.
