Question:

How do you calculate the ratio of core thrust vs bypass thrust at various altitudes on a jet engine...?

More specifically what variables do I need to know to figure these two ratings from total thrust? I tried using NASA's jet engine simulator but the basic version doesn't give me enough parameters and the download version I cant get to work. Any jet propulsion engineers floating around out there!? :)

  1. Look up the engine on the manufacturers website.

high bypass engines usually have 10x the core thrust, its more efficient that way.  also, the goal is to not have lots of core thrust (keep the air subsonic through all 10-12 stages of compresor and 10 or so stages of turbine.

if you want to estimate the core thrust then look for the optimum fuel consumption schedule in pounds per hour, then determine the airmass flow requirement for combustion...factor 60-75% overall efficiency.  the best fuel mixture is fairly rich with respect to stoiciometry.  too hot and you start stressing things.
