How does the race track do it? what factors do they take into account? I just know what the pay out is after the race but is there a way of figuring it out before the race?

  1. you cannnot really it depends on the pool....

    how many won/lost...

  2. You cannot possibly calculate it as the information used in the calculation is not available to you.

Almost every track posts "will pays" for exactas on the tote board or TV screens all the way up to post time.  But with trifectas, it's impossible to post all the combinations and probable payoffs in a two-dimensional format.

Sometimes, the trifecta payoff is way out of line based upon the odds.  Last year, I hit a trifecta at Mountaineer with three horses all under 6/1 and it paid $580.  A couple years ago, I hit the trifecta in the Belmont Stakes (the day everybody knew Afleet Alex was going to win).  I figured it would pay about $400-500, but was shocked when it came back $1,249.
